Police in Masaka have confirmed that nine people perished and twelve others were injured in a car crash along the Masaka-Mbarara highway on Wednesday night.
The fatal accident involved a trailer truck registration RAF 168S/RL 1426, passenger Taxi number UBJ 084N and a Toyota Mark II registration number UAP 126A .
Eyewitness say both cars had a head on collusion at the Kagganda junction in Kinoni Town council in Lwengo district.
It is alleged that the trailer truck travelling to Mbarara lost control and hit the passenger taxi,causing it to overturn before ramming into the Toyota Mark II which was headed towards Masaka.
Richard Komaketch, the Greater Masaka Regional Traffic Police Commander pins the accident on over speeding and reckless driving. He also says the trailer driver suffered a tyre burst that led him to loose control.
He adds that the trailer also drifted to another lane with on-coming vehicles.
Komaketch sayst the deceased are currently lying at Masaka Regional Referral hospital mortuary as police identifies the bodies.
Dr. Muhammad Nsubuga, the in-charge of the Accident Ward at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, reveals that they received 14 causalities that included nine males, five females, and a two-year child who are still undergoing treatment to save their lives.
The admitted causalities according to the hospital patients’ manifest are; Babirye Kembabazi, Darlington Mwesigwa, Robert Naume, Rinah Akankunda, Alex Ahimbisibwe, Enzo Mugume, Enock Katambuka, Christopher Mutumba, Winnie Nabajju, Isma Adam, Eva Tukunsave and Edgar Mugume .
