The Champions League group stage kicks off this week. One of the most intriguing matches of the first day of the group stage will take place at the San Siro, as AC Milan host Newcastle United.
Newcastle are back in the Champions League for the first time in nearly two decades. Their first opponent will be seven-time Champions League winner AC Milan.
AC Milan to host
This will be the first meeting between these clubs in European football. Group F is considered a group of death, as Milan and Newcastle are joined by Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund.
AC Milan go into matchday No. 1 of the group stage following an embarrassing 5-1 loss in the Derby della Madonnina over the weekend.
The result was Milan’s first defeat of the campaign. Stefano Pioli’s team had won its three previous matches before the defeat.
Newcastle, on the other hand, ended a three-match Premier League losing streak over the weekend by claiming a 1-0 win over Brentford.
The victory came in controversial style as Newcastle were awarded a contentious penalty while Brentford were denied a spot kick for a similar foul.
It is difficult to tell which Newcastle team will show up at the San Siro due to their lack of positive form this season. Before winning on Saturday, the Magpies had lost to Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton.
Eddie Howe’s injury issues have eased up in recent days. Heading into the match, he could have only three players missing due to injuries.
AC Milan to host
Defenders Javier Manquillo and Emil Krath are both doubts to make the squad. Midfielder Joe Willock is also a doubt following a hamstring injury.
Callum Wilson leads Newcastle in goals with three in the Premier League. Alexandre Isak has tallied two. Both should play a part against Milan.
