Chamili, Kenzo and Vinka missout on Grammy Nomination!
The Recording Academy has officially revealed nominations for the 2024 GRAMMYs, which will take place Sunday, Feb. 4, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, USA.
Unlike the previous year, its absurd that no Ugandan artist has been nominated despite some having placements in the recently announced 2024 Grammy Awards considerations by the Recording Academy.
It should be recalled in October, Ugandan songstress Vinka’s song “Bailando” was considered for two Grammy nominations; Best Global Music Performance and Best African Music Performance.
Sensational multi-international-award winning singer Eddy Kenzo to saw some of his works considered in over 4 categories: Best Global Music Album “Blessing”, Best Global Music Performance “Ukulele Esanyu” FT Daniel Ho, Best African Music Performance “Positivity” FT Masaka Kids Africana, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance “Spread Hope Send Love Around The World” FT Various Artists.
Ugandan legendary singer, Jose Chameleone’s “Ready” song in which he combined efforts with Jamaican legendary recording and performing group Morgan Heritage, scooped a double consideration in categories, Best Global Music Performance and Best Music Video respectively.
It should be noted that in 2022, Eddy Kenzo, became the first Ugandan to be nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards.
The Big Talent Entertainment boss was nominated alongside Ghana’s Rocky Dawuni; South Africa’s Wouter Kellerman; Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode; and Burna Boy are all running for Best Global Music Performance.
However, on the African continent, Nigeria’s Burna Boy scored four nods, including for Best Melodic Rap Performance, Best Global Music Album, Best Global Music Performance and Best African Music Performance. Fellow Nigerian singer Davido secured three nods.
At the same time, Asake, Olamide, Ayra Starr and Tyla scored their first nominations in the Best African Performance category.
Three new GRAMMY categories will debut at the 2024 GRAMMYs: Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.
These history-making category additions are part of a larger set of updates and amendments, which go into effect immediately at the 2024 GRAMMYs, aimed at making the GRAMMY Awards process “more fair, transparent and accurate”, according to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr.
The GRAMMYs voting process begins with members and record companies submitting entries, which are then screened for eligibility and category placement. The Online Entry Process (OEP) Access Period took place from July 17, 2023 – Aug. 31, 2023. First Round Voting occurred from Oct. 11 to Oct. 20, 2023. Lastly, Final Round Voting will span Dec. 14, 2023, to Jan. 4, 2024 — and the winners will be announced during Music’s Biggest Night on Feb. 4!
