A section of traders in Uganda are urging leaders from the East African Community to devise a solution to the protracted war in South Sudan, expressing fear for economic growth.
They claim trade between Uganda and Sudan is causing a decline in exports and affecting their businesses.
The traders under their self proclaimed association Freedom Movement Uganda, say the situation directly jeopardizes the security of neighboring countries, with Uganda being significantly affected by the ripple effects.
Mbaziira John, the Chairman of the Freedom Movement Uganda, emphasized the alarming threat posed by the war, including the potential proliferation of arms is a scenario observed in previous conflicts worldwide.
Mbaziira called for urgent attention from East African Community leaders to address the root causes of the conflict in South Sudan. He noted that regional stability is crucial for fostering economic growth and maintaining peaceful relations among member states.
In response to the humanitarian crisis stemming from the conflict, the business community has extended support in the form of basic necessities such as clothing, bedding, diapers, and more. Mbaziira says the gesture aims to provide relief to those affected by the war and underscores the importance of solidarity in times of crisis.
Additionally, the business leaders are rallying fellow Ugandans to take action by contributing to the cause through donations.
The collective effort seeks to alleviate the suffering caused by the conflict and underscores the community’s commitment to making a positive impact in the face of adversity.
