Drama scenes played out at Masaka Hall on Monday when two Senior Six students were busted with smartphones mid-exam.
According to UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Kalule, the two including Nabahinda Cecilia and Nakiyimba Grace were caught red-handed. One using artificial intelligence to download an essay and the other sneaking in summarised notes on her phone.
“Imagine! In the exam room. With smartphones banned, these students are now under police investigation for their high-tech trickery.” said Kalule
UNEB warns that anyone caught in exam malpractice will face the music, as they crack down on exam fraud nationwide.
As Uganda’s national exams proceed, UNEB is facing numerous incidents of examination malpractice, with several cases already under investigation. In Iganga, police arrested a school director for hiding 97 students at a guest house while the school hired impersonators to sit their PLE exams.
In Mpigi, seven suspects, including teachers from St. Mugaga Primary School, were arrested after they attempted to provide students with pre-written answers. The suspects reportedly smuggled the answers to students inside the examination hall, but their actions were foiled by UNEB officials.
In Kazo District, threesuspects were detained for allegedly sharing exam materials on social media platforms. These suspects, who included school administrators, were reportedly selling exam answers to desperate students.
UNEB has urged the public to report any suspected malpractice cases and reiterated the severe penalties for offenders under the UNEB Act, which includes imprisonment and heavy fines.
