Jinja was left in shock on Monday evening after an armed robbery turned deadly in Bugembe – Wanyama Mukekanga.

Ruthless gunmen riding in a Toyota Premio gunned down Airtel sales agent Emma Opus, before making off with over UGX 22 million in cash and his mobile phones.

Opus, an employee of V.G Keshwala and Sons Limited, a company under the Keshwala Group, was on duty at an Airtel service center when the assailants struck. Witnesses say the thugs emerged from their car, opened fire, and left him bleeding before speeding off with the loot.

Security operatives rushed to the crime scene, recovering Opus’ motorcycle (UFJ 397Q) and a spent cartridge. He was first taken to Alshafa Hospital in Mpumudde before being transferred to Jinja Main Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 7 PM.

The deceased, a native of Amuria District, had no security escort despite handling large sums of money.

Kiira regional police spokesperson Spokes person James Mubi warned businesses dealing in bulk cash to hire police or private security escorts, cautioning that failure to do so is a financial risk too big to ignore.

Meanwhile, detectives are relying on CCTV footage to identify the suspect vehicle, and expert phone trackers are hunting down the stolen mobile phones. Jinja police have vowed to bring the killers to book.
