Professor Augustus Nuwagaba has been chosen as the new Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda,
He replaces Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, who has been promoted to Governor.
Nuwagaba, an experienced economist with expertise in monetary policy, fiscal management, and poverty eradication, is expected to play a key role in navigating Uganda’s financial sector .
With a strong background in economic consultancy, Nuwagaba has held senior roles, including managing consultant at REEV Consult International Limited, and has worked with international organizations on developing tax policies and promoting financial inclusion.
He has also contributed to policy formulation and taught at Makerere University. Nuwagaba holds advanced degrees from Makerere University and the London School of Economics, solidifying his reputation as a key figure in economic reform.
Born in 1964 in Kabale Municipality, Nuwagaba is the sixth-born in a family of seven siblings. His father died when he was four years old, so he was raised by his mother, who died, when Nuwagaba was in Senior 2, at age of 16 years.
Nuwagaba has been a member of the teaching staff at Makerere University, since he returned from his master’s degree studies in London in the early 2000s. He serves as the chairperson of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association.
Nuwagaba has been married to Lillian Nuwagaba since 1997. Together they are the parents of four children.
He is a Rotarian with Rotary Club of Muyenga district 9211 (Major Donor). He is the 34th President of the club serving in the Rotary year 2021-2022.
