The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has called an urgent meeting over rising hate speech, fake news and sensationalism in the media.

Executive Director Hon. Thembo Nyombi says some broadcasters are spreading hatred, fueling violence and threatening national security. He says this has left the National Security Council is also alarmed, warning that unchecked content could destabilize the country.

“The Commission has noted with concern the continued broadcast of content that contains hate speech and is creating disharmony among the public. Such content is increasingly sensational, spreading hatred, false information, and is capable of inciting violence among the population,” the letter reads in part

The meeting set for Feb 27, 9 AM at UCC House, Bugolobi will see top media bosses expected to attend in person. These include various media associations like the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), Rural Broadcasters Association (RUBA), Uganda Media Owners Association (UMOA), Independent Online Journalists Association of Uganda, and Online Media Publishers Association (OMPA).

It will also be attended by Security agencies and Ministry of ICT officials

Nyombi warns: Media platforms have a duty to inform, educate, and unite the public. However, we are seeing a worrying trend where some outlets are amplifying divisive narratives that threaten national security and social cohesion. We urge all broadcasters to reflect on their role in shaping public discourse responsibly,”
