Mityana was left in shock last night after IP Namanya Nelson, a senior police officer, met a tragic and untimely end when he smashed into a parked truck along the Mityana-Mubende Road.
The 48-year-old officer, who was in charge of the Kisita FFU detach in Kassanda, was riding his Yamaha motorcycle (UP 8016) when he failed to spot a broken-down truck and crashed into it head-on at Buswabulongo, Mityana at around 8:00 PM.
Racheal Kawala, the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson says the killer truck, a white and blue Renault (Reg. UBJ 394S / UAD 535Q) had reportedly broken down earlier in the day, but its reckless driver abandoned it without placing warning signs to alert other motorists. This gross negligence turned deadly for Namanya, who suffered severe injuries and died upon arrival at Mityana Hospital.
Kawala says police have launched a manhunt for the driver of the truck, who is currently on the run. Authorities warn that such careless parking is a silent killer on Uganda’s roads and are urging all motorists to carry reflector triangles to prevent more unnecessary deaths.
The officer’s body has been taken to the Mityana Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem, as investigations continue.
