Police in Jinja City are investigating a tragic case of suspected domestic violence in which a boda boda rider allegedly set his home on fire, killing his wife and baby, before committing suicide.

The incident occurred in Katende Triangle, Bugembe, on March 11 at approximately 2:30 AM.

According to police reports, Edirisa Isabirye (25) is believed to have deliberately placed a burning charcoal stove under the bed, igniting a massive fire that killed his wife, Mirabu Kakazi (17), and their daughter, Mirabu Munana (9 months).

Speaking on the incident, SP James Mubi, Kiira Regional Police spokesman says Isabirye, overcome with guilt, later hanged himself using a bedsheet inside the same house.

According to Mubi, preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had been struggling with a troubled marriage, marked by persistent conflict, domestic violence, and controlling behavior.

The late Mirabu Kakazi, daughter of Peter Kiwaala, will be laid to rest in Namagera Town Council, Jinja District, while Isabirye and his daughter will be buried in Bukoma Sub-county, Luuka District.

Mubi has called on the public to recognize early warning signs of toxic relationships and seek professional counseling or intervention when necessary.

“People must know when to walk away from life-threatening marriages or relationships. Seeking help can prevent tragedies like this,” SP Mubi stated.

The police also advised couples to promote mutual respect, trust, open communication, and conflict resolution strategies to foster healthy relationships.
