Police are hot on the heels of a suspected thug who narrowly escaped death after his partner-in-crime was lynched by furious locals in a violent robbery that rocked Lweza Cell A, Ndejje Division, on the evening of April 11.

It all started around 6:20 PM when two unidentified men on a red Haojue motorcycle (UGG 774A) launched an attack outside N & M Unisex Salon. Armed with an AK-47 rifle, the duo shattered the windows of a parked Toyota Premio (UBE 079Z) and grabbed two bags before speeding off.

But things took a bloody turn.

As they made their getaway, a brave boda boda rider, Tumwesigye Peter (27), tried to intervene, only to be shot along with a bystander, Abdul Swabur (18). Both victims were rushed to Mildmay Hospital, with Swabur later referred to Mulago Referral Hospital in critical condition.

That’s when the community struck back.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Spokesman for Kampala Metropolitan Police says boda boda riders and residents gave chase, cornering the robbers in a dramatic manhunt. One thug was caught and beaten to death on the spot, while his armed accomplice managed to slip through the chaos and is now on the run.

Owoyesigyire says at the scene, police recovered a red Haojue motorcycle, an AK-47 rifle, a red bag used to hide the weapon, a black bag with a ring spanner (belonging to the victim), two mobile phones, a cartridge, and even a national ID believed to belong to the deceased suspect.

Authorities are now tracking the fugitive, who they believe could still be armed and dangerous.

“We commend the bravery of boda boda riders and locals who responded swiftly,” he said .

“But we caution against mob justice. Let’s work together with the law.”
